Warhammer 40K Dawn of War - Review
Dawn of War is an RTS game that lets you experience the battle ravaged universe of Warhammer 40k. With warriors and xeno’s fighting it out across scarred lands and terrified populace, this game didn’t receive a “Gold Game” from PCGAMES for nothing.
In the campaign you take command of the Blood Ravens, a famous space marine chapter with much history. Orks are invading and slaughtering populace of Tartarus and making things pretty intense for the poor imperial guard stationed there. Fortunately, the Blood Ravens totally kill butt and with their physical prowess and successful tactics, descend upon the war torn planet in order to drive the endless number of Orks to oblivion. The campaign offers a cool enough story that goes on for quite some time, with twists and such to spice things up for the battle hardened Space marines. The main objective in this RTS is to capture requisition points in order to fund an army, along with power supplies to boost your technological advantage and build higher tech units and buildings. The game offers a really enjoyable experience a long with hours of fun to be had fighting your way through with whomever you choose. In single player you are able to select up to four races that are available, these races include the Orks, Space Marines, Elder and of course the dreaded Chaos Space Marines. Custom matches can be quite a bit of fun, with different game modes thrown into the mix to make it a little bit more interesting then the same old “annihilate all enemies to win”. Also, units are made up of squads and provide a more diverse RTS experience. The most powerful unit you are able to summon forth into the battlefield is the mighty hero, with a whole lot more damage and health then regulars, they are truly a figure to be trifled with. Heroes in my opinion were a tad overpowered in the earlier stages of games but gradually scale more fairly. Each hero is able to be attached to squads to increase their moral and fighting capabilities.
Multiplayer can offer some memorable times, with you and friends duking it out in the warhammer universe, or even teaming up to prevail against all who dare! Unfortunately, I did however experience some frustrating lag and it did put me off of the multiplayer for some time. Although, when my internet felt a little better I did get a chance to play some matches here and there. Tactics and strategies were basically the same every game, make rockets on all squads and stun them as many times as possible. I do think this could have been improved with a more diverse range of units and weapons, but barely scratches the positive shell that forms so elegantly over this great game. Unit upgrades help dramatically over enemies and do turn the tides of war over a lesser tech opponent.
The visuals and textures are excellent, offering a dark gritty atmosphere that the warhammer universe so truly deserves. With great shades and detailed models, and really well put together maps, I realize why this game got such a name for itself. The soundtrack is awesome and sounds of gunfire and massive battles with heroes slaying demon and foes alike gives the game such a nice polish. If you’re a fan of the table top and would love to see it all come to life in game, then step on down and bring out your inner commander! This game offers nothing but a good quality, insanely fun RTS experience everyone can enjoy. |
