Batman Arkham Asylum - Review
Batman Arkham Asylum delivers the best gameplay of a superhero game ever made. A lot of movies that have come over to gamers computers screens have usually ended up pretty awful and a little rushed. But this is indeed the opposite reaction I have for this game.
Batman Arkham Asylum is set in the DC universe, with him giving the joker in to Arkham Asylum but being suspicious as to why he gave in so easily. Of course his bat instincts are right and the joker takes over the facility and releases all of the ruthless murderess inmates, taking the Asylum for himself. Batman must put a stop to the Jokers rampage and make sure he doesn’t get killed in the process. The gameplay is nothing short of awesome, the combat seems to flow so well and it isn’t easy to the point a 6 year old can master it. It offers diverse fights and a moreish attitude, with fights being as fun as they look. The controls are basic, yet very fun and effective, with the left mouse button being your normal attack, the right being your counter, and the middle mouse wheel being your powerful stun. Your normal attacks are the backbone of your combat, but must be timed well with counters. Counter attacks are performed when an enemy is about to hit you and shows an alert marker on top of the dealer, giving you the good to go sign to counter and punish. The stun however is used to… well, stun, it’s that simple.
Throughout the game you also are able to obtain Batman’s famous gadgets, along with some newly created ones. Gadgets spanning from the famous batarang, explosive gel, and much, much more. With all these tools at your disposal you are able to create traps and plan out tactics to take out your enemies in the most effective and badass way you can think of. Now if head to head combat and traps isn’t your thing, you can also do it the old school ninja way, silent takedowns. Silent takedowns are performed when you are behind an enemy and you click the right mouse button to take down your foe without anyone even knowing. The voice acting and sounds were really well done. With great voice actors like Mark Hamill as the Joker and Kevin Conroy as the Batman, with many other really well done and excellent voice acting around the table. The music that plays throughout the game sets the mood for each situation really well as you fight your way through the Asylum.
Now with so many things going right for this game you must be thinking, is it really the most perfect game ever created? And I reply with, well, pretty much yes. But in saying that there is a flaw that I have come to notice and that is the stiff moving of batman’s character at times. Batman does sometimes run a little, well, strange, but honestly, you will not notice it when you are deep into a fight with all these thugs, because the game delivers so exceptionally well in every category. I truly think this is one of the best games ever created, and will be for some time to come. |
