Medieval Total War 2 - Review
Medieval times were definitely not for the faint hearted, of course, a lot of you might be thinking fire breathing dragons and damsels in distress, but no, instead, epic scale battles for land and riches! Medieval Total War 2 delivers a breathtaking and jaw dropping experience with you commanding huge armies scaling to thousands of knights and crossbowmen ready to smite down your foes with a simple click of the mouse.
With Medieval Europe as your battleground, you are ruler of any kingdom you pick. With an abundance of different units and tactics that are all ready to be put into action by a player like you, the battlegrounds will surely be a glorious thing to see. The single player Grand Campaign lets you choose from a list of factions with different strengths, weaknesses, and an in depth historical story. Once you are happy with your choice, you are set upon Medieval Europe, with war everywhere. There are many different things to do, like diplomatic efforts to cease war, trade with other factions, and even asking for resources in exchange for land and an alliance.
The gameplay is fantastic, with so many things to achieve, whether you want to contribute an army to a crusade, pillage lands, have princes and kings marry faction’s daughters, there will always be a load to do to keep things interesting. Land battles are truly a magnificent site, with hundreds of men being ordered around the battlefield in splendid formations. Strategies must be executed with care for your own men’s needs, with moral and routing still a possibility in any battle, you are required to play out with caution and intelligence. There is a huge variety of different units at your disposal, with English Long bowmen being the devastators ranged combat, and French Knights cutting down enemies as they trample down their foes lines. There are some stunning visuals and well-designed maps for this total war title, with huge fortresses being sieged, to the more wide plains as enormous armies duke it out. Textures can be a little glitched at times, but don’t do much to negatively affect the games positives. Unit models are well made, whether it be the armored cavalry or the lowly peasant, they all offer a really cool diversity among them. With large scale battles being the highlight of the total war titles, there is something satisfying about watching so many countless numbers fighting on one’s computer screen without the PC breaking down. The soundtrack is okay, setting the mood in a dark gothic kind of way in the menu screen. Sounds of soldiers fighting amongst each other gives you an insanely good atmosphere of carnage among the battlefields of Europe, while artillery pound their way through enemies defences.
With minor bugs and crashes only afflicting the game in the slightest, this is probably one of my favorite total war titles that have been released. So if you’re a total war fan, then this my friends, will probably most definitely be for you. |
