Alien Vs Predator - Review
Whether you have been a fan of the Alien or Predator franchise or not, this game will deliver an okay experience to players, but this game in general could have been a whole lot better. Now, this game isn’t the best first person shooter out there and I’m afraid to say I don’t think it ever will be, but you have to agree the concept of it sounds so good on paper, but not the best in game. Although in saying that, there have been Alien vs Predator video games in the past that were very well done and really enjoyable games, sadly, this one doesn’t do it for me.
Alien vs Predator places you in either of 3 races that you may choose from including, Alien, Predator, or a Human marine. All three storylines mix well with the plot and as you progress will slowly all meld with each other. The main plot is not the most original story but still works for me, a planet goes quiet and a group of marines are sent there to see what happened and to see why all the lights are out in this peaceful colony that inhabits it. Of course, Alien and Predator has something to do with why everyone is gruesomely murdered or missing to never be seen again. The game offers a decent campaign but seemed far too short for me to really enjoy or want to play through again. The marine campaign is a pretty straight forward “shoot and kill” kind of walkthrough but does offer times of horror and fear… but not the fear that you really want to have happen. The Alien and Predator campaigns were a little more exciting and diverse with the melee combat and the really gruesome executions that you can pull off to unfortunate enemies that tick you off.
With such hype that came with the game being released, it really didn’t do it much justice and maybe that’s why it fell of the wagon a little harder than most. On an up note though, the game does offer some multiplayer fun and even a survival mode where you must hold off waves of Aliens. Although this is a cool thing it still doesn’t deliver that nicely compared to many other multiplayer shooters. Other multiplayer game modes that are included are team death match, a normal death match, Dominion, and some other cool modes that include infestation and Predator Hunt. With infestation a player is picked to be an alien and the marines must work together to survive. If the alien does however get a kill, the fallen player will join the alien and become one himself to take out the remaining, and that’s basically how it goes. With Predator Hunt, one player is picked to be a predator and must kill the remaining players who play as marines in a large map. As cool as the game modes sound, I couldn’t overly get into them as much as I would have liked too. The sounds of the game were pretty decent and the background
music set the mood really well. There were parts that reminded me exactly of
the film and had me shaking in my chair while I slowly pushed myself to go up
to the half ripped door. The sound effects gave justice to the game with the
really cool and iconic pulse rifle from the alien movies, and the motion
tracker with the spooky yet ever so creepy sound of something moving through
the shadows.
Alien vs Predator delivers a decently good looking graphical game, with cool environments on an alien world, but unfortunately does get tedious after being thrown into the same area throughout the campaign, time and time again. As much as I wanted to love this game, I really couldn’t, the sound effects were really well done and sounded as if they came straight from the movie, but if you want to have a good time playing as an Alien or Predator or even a marine, check out the classic 1999 game. |
