Dawn of War 2 - Review
With real time strategy based games you usually get the drift on what to do and how to accomplish it. With Dawn of War 2, it’s a complete different story. Relic has eliminated base buildings and has committed everything to the player’s strategy and tactics in order to prevail upon the battlefield of war. Glorious battle scenes and heroic stands are the bread and butter of this wonderfully made masterpiece Relic has delivered us. Dawn of War 2 embraces the Company of Heroes game style, with the cover system, destructible environment, and the capturing of strategic points in order to gain acquisition points. If you’re a fan of either COH or the warhammer universe, then this game is definitely a must play for you.
I found the gameplay seriously addictive for any strategy junky out there who wishes to play on a more realistic battlefield then previous RTS’s. As you plan your tactics with whatever race you choose to command, you gain an in depth, yet sometimes challenging outlook on how each race plays out. With the Space Marines being the main storyline in the campaign, it is recommended new players should start out with the mighty warriors and progress as they feel fit too. Also to add to the arsenal of great things to come with this game, is the creative army painter from Dawn of War 1. Glory is found in the campaign of Dawn of War 2. With you as a newly appointed commander with battle brothers of the Blood Ravens, it is up to you and your cunningness to destroy the xenomorph threat that lingers on your home planets. You are able to call attacks on certain areas of the map and retake or defend territories in the name of the Emperor. As you progress, your squads level up along with your hero character with which they can upgrade their attributes to further their power. When retaking a territory or defending, items drop from time to time off of enemy units, these items can be obtained and placed in different squads of your choice. The items bring with them attributes and powers that will help you morph your squads into powerful units.
There are many ways to overthrow your enemy, whether it be with ruthless power tactics, strategic patience, or both, you will always find a challenge in nearly every situation your enemy has placed you in. Requisition points are your main objective in order to thrive and build, at times you find yourself defending to the last man to defend a choke point in order for your enemy to have no chance in gaining the same advantages you possess. Power plants are also required in order to build higher tier units and buildings. Power plants are captured exactly like requisition points are obtained, except you must build a power node to further the power resource intake you gain. Multiplayer can be enjoyable at times and can be quite addictive. When battling it out with fellow players and trying to push your way to victory, it can be challenging at times, especially if you have very little knowledge of the race you’re playing, or the opposing teams. Just like in single player you are able to choose how you want to go about your strategy and how you shall utterly crush your foes.
The soundtrack of Dawn of War 2 really sets the gritty mood of the war torn universe. Voice acting done through the storyline are very effective and deliver a really nice and rich experience for players. Dawn of War 2 is truly a well-made game with an exciting and tremendous campaign that is fleshed out and polished nicely. With a few bugs and sound bugs that pop in and out from time to time, it doesn’t even bother me the slightest while fighting and leading the armies of war! If you haven’t done so already, I definitely recommend checking it out.
