DOTA 2 - Review
DOTA 2 is a free game featuring beast and foe, heroes and legends, all mixed up into one. Dota 2 truly upholds the originals legacy with enjoyable, yet challenging gameplay and stunning visuals. So do you believe you have what it takes to prevail in the defense of the ancients? Then take up arms! And prepare for the experience you’ve been craving for.
With the successful custom map in Warcraft 3 that skyrocketed in popularity, developers thought “why not create a proper game for the title?” and with those simple words, gaming history was made. Whether you feel like being a crafty assassin or a heroic brute, Dota 2 will deliver a satisfying experience all round. Now if you’re like me and don’t have too much experience with DOTA, well, it’ll be a little more challenging than usual, but do not fear! Learning can be just as fun as playing the real thing. With the introduction of helpful tutorials that have been recently imported into the game, I suggest you definitely have a play through each and slowly expand your knowledge. Now, let’s talk about the basics on what you must achieve in order to succeed. Each team is made up of five players, each player must pick from a wide range of heroes with separate roles that they are suited to. Once each player has chosen their characters they are set upon a map with 3 lanes and various buildings like towers and barracks. Towers are the kind of strategic footholds each lane have over their opposition and although they don’t deliver a high amount of damage, you must destroy them in order to prevail into the enemies base. I absolutely love the gameplay and hero selection that’s been offered, with a diverse range of different combinations and tactics, and a hell of an amount of items to choose from.
The visuals are very nicely done and character designs keep true to a lot of their original models and ability designs. Scenery and details are all quite high, with stunning water reflections and smooth textures that bring this game a nice edge. There were some glitches and strange rendering bugs that occurred, but nothing terribly annoying enough for it to have a negative impact. I absolutely love the models and abilities that have been created and really hit sweet with the classic Warcraft 3 custom maps visuals. DOTA 2 also embraces custom skins, items and models in the Steam Workshop. Creative gamers are able to make a percentage off of their designs through the sales of their fantastic art, and offer the public a wider range of things to purchase for in game.
The soundtrack is memorable in it's own kind of way, but nothing terribly outstanding. In-game sounds make the bloodbaths through lanes and intense moments that much more satisfying. With heroes taunting their slain opponents and your hero making mighty gestures through the heat of battle... it really is quite wicked. Spell effects are visually pleasant, and sound just as good as they look. Weapons clunking into enemies bodies, with Axe going nuts and swinging his weapon everywhere when he pleases, sets the mood of a really intense and unforgiving game.
Although DOTA 2 has quite a big learning curve in order to succeed, it also offers a very satisfying experience when up to speed with average players. If you’re a fan of League of Legends, Hon, or the original DOTA, you will definitely want to have a try of this game. |
