Batman Arkham City - Review
The Dark Knight is back, and a little more irritated than usual, with Arkham going insane with villains and thugs taking control of the streets, Batman really isn’t in the most pleasant of moods. Batman Arkham City takes place after the events of Arkham Asylum, with the city being used as a new maximum security kind of home. The story also offers a brand new plot with famous villains that any batman fan will recognize at first glance.
Batman Arkham City gets you right into the action straight away, with your crime fighting abilities and flawless moves (unless you say otherwise) taking down thugs and criminals, sometimes without them even realizing it. This game has truly expanded this franchise, with the introduction of an open world and a ton of new gadgets and things to do just incase you don’t feel up to bashing your way through the main story. Side quests are also a new addition to this wonderfully tailored game, along with new challenging riddles the notorious riddler has put in so generously for you to solve. Through the story (depending if you have purchased the Catwoman DLC) you will have the chance to play as Catwoman, and trust me, it’s just as enjoyable as kicking ass as batman and gives you a really cool and different gamestyle. Unfortunately, Catwoman doesn’t have as many gadgets and what not, but boy, she certainly knows how to kick some butt! Her story also melds with the main plot, and in my opinion, is necessary in order to get the complete best out of your experience. The combat has been developed even further from Asylum and now introduces a whole new range of moves and take downs that you may use at your disposal. The old gadgets have appeared once again with the addition of quite a lot of new ones that you obtain throughout the game, and are necessary in order to complete the story and to find certain riddles. As you bash and crack unfortunate thugs, you find yourself duking it out with classic villains from the comics and other appearances of different characters. Boss fights aren't the most challenging unfortunately, but do deliver a satisfactory challenge at times. As you progress, solving riddles and completing missions, you are also rewarded character trophies, concept art, and much more that the game has to offer.
I guess I can’t say the game is flawless in every way... well, actually I can! This games graphics is beautiful and gives you a kin of comic book look at everything, with the environment of the hostile city of arkham, it really gives it a nice, polished look. Now, it didn't seem as gritty and as dark as the first, but still delivers ever so well, with the change of more realism that Rocksteady has approached. The voice acting is excellent, and that’s a bit of an understatement to be honest, everything is delivered so finely and with such finesse that it causes the magic from the comics and movies to spring to life and give it even more justice then it already has. The soundtrack really sets the dark, harsh mood of the gameplay and gives you an awesome atmosphere to play in.
This game is just as good, maybe even better, with the ability to free roam and do as you please when you please while gliding around and being bad ass at the same time. Truly this game is easily one of my favorites and most treasured games that I have ever played. If you’re a fan of either the comics, movies, or even the first game, I guarantee you will have a blast with Batman Arkham City. |
