War of the Roses - Review
Whether you’re fan of medieval warfare or not, War of the Roses will keep you glued to your screen as you slash your way from low ranked footmen to a Chivalrous Knight. War of the Roses is one of the first melee games (along with Chivalry) to really put you in a raging melee battlefield with nothing but a multiplayer aspect to it, with the exception of battle training for single player. War of the Roses also offers a huge amount of customizations, such as custom classes, Family crests, weapons, armor and even a small customization option for your soldiers face and voice.
The game is based solely on multiplayer and requires experience and expertise to flow through combat as you slice your way to victory with your English Long sword, or pound your enemies into the soil with your trusty 2h mace. Average games are made up of two teams of 32 against each other (and with later patches even up to 64!) battling it out in medieval England. There are only two game modes, unfortunately, but both offer hours of fun each. These two game modes include Assault and Team Death match. Assault is based around invading the opposing team’s fortress, or defending your home to the death! While the objective of team deathmatch is to slay the enemy team all the way to victory! Combat is solely revolved around your mouse; with swinging heavy weapons of war you use your mouse to create the momentum and power of the throw. Blocking is also achieved with your mouse (unless you choose otherwise through the controls settings) so you must read your enemies attacks and block them with the appropriate direction their weapon is coming to you.
Executions.. one of the games coolest features for teenage boys who love their blood and gore. You’re in the heat of battle, your sword cuts the enemy down, he begs for mercy, but.. his time has come. The Executions in WOTR are brutal, but probably stay true to what it would have been like in medieval times. Once a player has been knocked down there is a time window for someone on the opposing team to execute him and put him out of his misery. Although, if no one is up to the task, the player may beg for mercy and re-spawn. Whether you are executed or not, it will have no effect on you, only the player who does the execution will pick up some bonus points.
War of the Roses visuals are really well made and offer a beautiful looking game, the only downside is you will need a powerful PC to run on the maximum settings without it burning into flames. The game offers stunning battlegrounds to wage war on, and wonderful graphical features with customization's and such.
This game is easily one of my favorite, if not, favorite game of all time. A very well made melee game, the first I've probably seen this well created. There are a few bugs and flaws that are being constantly fixed and updated through patches, but will definitely not put you off playing it. A great game that we loved to review.
