Gears of War - Review
When Gears of War first hit stores, everyone was blown away at the new style of shooter. With a third person view and brutality that went a little nuts at times, it was no wonder it got a build up to its release. With over three million copies sold in 10 weeks, you know you’re in for one hell of a game.
Gears of War places you in a pretty nasty scenario. With bloodthirsty subterranean aliens known as the Locust Horde, who use weaponry and tactics similar to human military, well.. It’s not the usual walk in the park. You play as the character Fenix and his struggle with Delta Squad to save humanity of the planet Sera. The campaign is ridiculously fun, especially when first learning the basic cover system and killing moves, and holds its magic throughout the whole game. Whether you like going balls deep and going out blazing, I guarantee the new cover system will keep you satisfied even being defensive. With the ability to cover behind objects, we’ve never actually seen anything like it in a game before, especially so fluently done.. Until now. It’s been so beautifully done that it melds well with the combat without it being clunky and annoying. As you progress to more challenging levels that present more Locusts, you find yourself dunking and weaving to different objects, slowly putting the hurt and pressure on your unfortunate enemies. If things indeed get a little hectic, you find yourself laying in a pool of blood, limping as fast as you can limp, waiting for a teammate to revive you.
The Locust Horde AI was surprisingly challenging at times, ducking under cover and shooting there way closer to your squad, they deliver a very satisfying kill when your crosshair finally meets there face. Missions are nearly completely different every time you progress, with exciting and diverse objectives, and levels that can creep the hell out of you! They all work one hundred percent for me. GOW boss battles can be really intense and you find yourself having an accident while this massive juggernaut comes running at you. So many things go right for this game that there is barely anything negative to say about it.. Except for maybe one problem. A wider range of weaponry would have gone a long way, but is a very minor flaw and there’s no way it affects the game by much. The visuals are gorgeous and deliver some of the best graphics you will ever see in shooters.
Co-op is a fantastic feature and lets you have hours of fun through to 2 o clock in the morning, laughing and battling it out with friends. The campaign is a whole lot more enjoyable with a friend by your side, with one of you getting killed over and over, while the other having to revive them while fending off waves of damn Locusts. Multiplayer can be a little too simple, with just team deathmatch and only supporting four on four gameplay, but is a cool change from other shooters. With the cover system being just as good with the multiplayer as the campaign, you find yourself slowly trying to progress to the enemy team, with bullets flying in every direction. Gears of War is easily a must buy for any shooter fans out there, and trust me, it deserves all the hype that it received on release and more. With such potential and breathtaking visuals and gameplay, you will not be disappointed. |
