Space Marine - Review
Space Marine places you in the boots of an Ultramarine Captain in the Warhammer 40k universe, after receiving a distress signal from a planet under a mass invasion of orks slaughtering and leaving a wave of destruction throughout the world. You and your battle brothers have been assigned to put a stop to this monstrosity and cut the orks down, even if it is done one.. by one. The story isn’t the most creative or original that I have seen, but it certainly gives you a heads up that this is going to be a bloody campaign.
As a Space Marine you have a lot at your disposal, physical prowess, being a master tactician, and having armour that looks kickass and doesn’t let a single scratch puncher through it. The gameplay is simple enough; you have a bolter, an abnormally large combat knife, and some grenades. The controls are pretty much like every other third person shooter with an additional melee element that can be used without having to switch between weapons in the heat of battle. There is also a cool feature that makes this game a lot more enjoyable, and that’s the fact that you must brutally destroy your opponent in order to regain health. With this implemented into the game it basically pushes you to become an insane bruiser that must utterly vanquish opponents in order to live. Now that’s what gives the meaning “kill or be killed” an extra buff. The world that you are set upon is basically what a world would look like when an army of war driven Orks comes pouring through destroying everything they can get their hands on. The graphics are really nice given the fact that you are on a planet being ripped apart on the surface, and offer really cool moments for the player.
Space Marine also offers an addictive multiplayer aspect to it also. In multiplayer, you can choose between game modes that offer a survival mode, with wave after wave of enemies come down upon you and your teammates. Or you can play the more traditional team death matches, capture the flag or domination based modes. As you get higher in level, you also get to create custom classes and customize your individual space marine to look glorious and fierce in the eyes of your opponents. There are also options to customize your weapon load outs so you can annihilate your enemies with different weapons of your choice. In order to unlock various weapons and aesthetic armor upgrades, there are a set of challenges for each weapon and armor piece in order to complete to have those upgrades at your disposal. Space Marines Campaign will deliver a satisfying experience to warhammer 40k lovers out there, and gamers who are entirely new to the universe. If you get bored or finish the campaign and are loathing for more, then multiplayer will keep you satisfied just that little while longer as you progress into a Space Marine veteran. There are a few flaws to this game, including some repetitive objectives in the campaign, lack of weapons and moves, but it still doesn't take much away from the greatness of this game.
