Viking Battle for Asgard - Review
In a time when Norse Gods ruled over the populace, heroes and mythical creatures roamed the lands, and a mighty warrior called Skarin comes to kick some serious butt. In Viking Battle for Asgard Skarin is mortally wounded and is about to go to Valhalla, however, Freya, Odin’s Daughter, steps in to save the mighty hero, on one condition, he must pledge his allegiance to her by defeating Hel’s armies and Hel herself.
Skarin is a big bulky, brute of a warrior, who likes to slice his enemies in half, again.. and again. As you progress through the storyline you must travel to different villages, do deeds for good people who are willing to fight beside you and mass a colossal army to drive the underworlds armies to oblivion. As you help fellow Vikings in order for them to join your cause, you’re also provided with currency to buy new items, and experience that allows you to level up and upgrade your abilities. Once you have gained a reasonable army, you lead the charge to slaughter Hel’s armies and slowly regain a foothold over the map. The quests in order to gain soldiers willing to help you can be interesting at times, but are definitely not the highlight of this game. Once all the boring stuff is done, you press on and lead enormous battles in third person, with Vikings leading beside you to charge the enemies horrific armies and put a stop to their rampage. Hack and slash is basically the bread and butter of the combat system and you will find yourself doing that the majority of the time while pulling off some executions when enemies are dazed. I also noticed at times that I would be fighting and seemed to have been doing the same moves over and over again… and well, that’s exactly what I was doing, although the execution moves are nice and all, it does get a little irritating having it repeat over and over again. Unfortunately, the gameplay and moves that you are able to perform aren’t spectacular and there’s hardly a variety on what you can accomplish. As you are in the midst of battle there are objectives that are required to complete in order to prevail against your enemies in the battlefield.
The environment is nothing to be fantastically impressed with, with lighting that can look a little off or rushed at times, and even models that aren't the most textured at times either. But in huge battles that are able to perform smoothly, you hardly notice such little things like that anyway. While cutting and slashing through enormous waves of enemy units, with your units fighting on to the death beside you, it does deliver a pretty unique atmosphere to it. The soundtrack is nothing to be remembered, and the sound effects of the world don’t really deliver.. well, anything. The world seems very dull at times and even with the speakers cranked up, it doesn't deliver the most thrilling experience.
Viking Battle for Asgard is a decent game to kill time or have enormous enjoyable battle scenes that keep you satisfied. But on a whole, I think this game could have done a whole lot better and polished things up a bit. |
