Halo Combat Evolved - Review
The game that put first person shooters to shame worldwide, with its release back in 2001, gamers everywhere were insanely impressed at how well this work of art was put together. Now if you’re a player of any of the more recent Halo’s in stores today, please, I beg you, take the time to sit down and play this colossal, classic video game.
Halo’s campaign revolves around a super soldier known as a Spartan, or nicknamed “Master Chief” and his struggle to save humanity from the alien forces of the Covenant. As you progress you find yourself being thrown into intense fire fights and fantastically well made maps. Each mission becomes more exciting and thrilling without ever having to do the same old boring objective again and again. As the story unfolds you itch for the next mission to see what it shall bring you. The Master Chiefs survivability relies on his powerful energy shield with a traditional health bar. Weaponry of either the humans or covenant both offer a substantial amount of power, although the covenants arsenal is easily the more favoured. Vehicles are obtained later in the game, with a variety of different machines to pick from, including the famous Warthog, Ghost, Wraith and much more. Enemy AI aren’t the smartest bunch, but they do offer a diverse range of different units and weapons to make it that much more challenging for players. Now if you’re not wanting to face waves of aliens by yourself, then, why not invite a friend! Co op campaign is seriously fun and will have you both at the edge of your seats, battling away with endless waves of enemies.
Multiplayer is definitely a big aspect to this game, with enjoyable maps and big team battles. There have been many occasions where my friends and I have played for hours on end duking it out. Blood Gulch is a famous map for all you Halo fans out there, and will offer some of your best moments in terms of multiplayer. The amount of game modes can be a little daunting and from my experience most players don’t play them all anyway. Once in the game, you’re subject to more players than you can handle, and explosions happening everywhere, your console can get a little glitched and frames tend to skip.
Halo in terms of graphics were insane when it was first released, and it put all other FPS video games of the time to shame. Textures and details that were put into the models of each character were very well polished and designed even by 2001 games standards. The soundtrack will always be remembered and you find yourself at times singing it in your head long after playing the game. Sound effects of Covenant saying gibberish is humorous, along with your poor human allies being blown away screaming ridiculously loud. Weapon effects are outstanding and pretty much everything in this game has been polished nicely.
So if you’re a fan of the Halo franchise but never got the chance to play the original, then come on! What are you waiting for, seriously? This game will literally change your gaming experience forever. |
